This week Steve Jobs (Appleannounced the new operating system for iPhones & iPod Touch. This release is by far more of an advance than any previous.

Steve Jobs circa 1990

The new operating system will contiain three new core features: (Check out the video below for yourself)

  1. Multi-tasking – letting you switch between 2 or more apps at once
  2. iAds – this is the big game changer and play from Apple
  3. iBooks – this will be available on iPhone & iPod Touch
  4. New security features – making the device more suitable for corporates (as they previously weren’t)

*One little downside is the new OS wont work on pre-3Gs versions.

iAds, the second feature could revolutionise mobile marketing, FINALLY! Why?

According to Jobs, average iPhone users spend 30 mins a day in 3rd party apps. The iAd system will deliver 1 ad every 3 mins, or 10 ads per day. According to Jobs, iPhone will have shipped 100 million devices by the US summer, which results in 1 billion ads being served every day. WOW!

Why this is such a big change and great news for marketers, is that it creates a market for advertisers to easily reach audience on mass, through one ad network. Currently AdMob, (owned by Google) who serves ads in mobile applications, has served 183 billion ads to date, check out their latest ad report here.

I believe the lack of uptake of mobile marketing is due to the barriers to entry, primarily the ability to reach lots of your audience, and changes like this one will open up the mobile as a viable comms platform. (Maybe)
